4 Do-it-yourself Makeovers

Do you remember when I told you that Mondays are for fresh starts? Well, what about if we begin with ourselves? Nowadays, we women tend to feel that we don’t look pretty enough, or that we have gained weight, or we simply are bored of our physical appearance. But let me tell you something. Even when you feel that way, you are still beautiful. You may only need a little improvement or something that highlights your natural beauty.

That’s why today I bring you 4 ways to do a complete makeover! These budget-friendly tips can be easily applied in the comfort of your home, and as a result, you will feel confident and beautiful again!

Let’s begin!

1. Get some GLOW!

Shiny hair is one of the best attributes a woman can have. If you are looking to make a subtle but nice change to your hair, the John Frieda Clear Shine Luminous Glaze is the answer (you can purchase it at Walmart for $7.49)! Use it after applying your shampoo. It works quickly and lasts approximately a week. I recommend to use it with moderation because contains silicon.

2. Add a little makeup!

I have always been the type of girl who thinks that less is more when it comes to makeup usage. In my opinion, makeup should be used to enhance your natural beauty, not to make you look like somebody else. You can apply illuminator on your cheek bones, nose, and upper lip to highlight your facial features. Also, I’m a true believer that mascara and eyelash curlers are the best tools to make your eyes pop up! Finally, add a different color of lips to your palette. This will make you look different and give your outfit a nice touch.

3. Back to basics!

One of the latest trends in nail beauty is the usage of acrylics with a triangular shape. Also, the glitter and nail art are widely used these days. I must say that I’m not a fan of this trend, I rather get a manicure on my own nails. I believe that classic colors like nude, red wine tones and French style look more elegant and sophisticated. So maybe once in a while, we can alternate between both to get a fresh a look.

4. Change your skincare routine!

Most times we stick to one line of products to clean our skin, and that’s totally fine. The problem is when we use the same routine for a skin that has developed other necessities. By this, I mean that weather changes, hormones, our period, are factors that can alter the appearance of our skin. So once in a while, it’s recommendable to get a skincare analysis and see in which conditions our skin is. There are websites such as SkinCarebyAlana and Kielh’s that do skin analysis for free! And if you are feeling creative and looking for natural and organic skincare products, take a look at How to Make Your Own Skincare Routine at Home. I made a step-by-step guide explaining you everything!

Feel free to add comments or ideas of different makeover tips! I would love to hear what you think.

Beauty wasn’t born in an operating room; you were born beautiful. Your beauty is a reflection of yourself. NEVER FORGET THAT.

If you want to reinvent yourself one day, just do a natural makeover!

Lavender Oil: A Miracle for Skin Problems

Have you heard about the properties of the lavender oil? No? At first, neither did me, but today I’m grateful to have found it.

I have really sensitive skin. Most chemicals irritate my skin leaving me red rashes for weeks. Waxing is terrible, and don’t even mention razors! Those are a nightmare for me! Since I have been dealing with these issues my entire life, I decided to do some research on how I can redress these effects. That’s how I came across this miracle!

Lavender oil is obtained by distilling lavender and is one of the essentials oils with more properties and benefits for the skin. In fact, people who are into the aromatherapy world know that this oil is a must have item. So let’s find out WHY lavender oil is so powerful.

  • Antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.
  • Regenerative: it keeps the skin clean and looking great because it regenerates any zone that has suffered burns, dermatitis, acne, etc.
  • Enhancer: when this oil is diluted in other oil, such as coconut oil, enhances all the properties of the base oil. In other words, coconut oil is known for hydrating the skin and by adding a few drops of lavender oil, the effect would be duplicated.

After learning these facts, I decided to incorporate this oil into my beauty routine. Not only because I wanted to enhance the appearance of my skin, but also because I wanted it to look healthier. But before proceeding to include it, I learned about WHAT was the best way in which I could use lavender oil in order to get most of its benefits without causing any harm or side effects on my skin. Remember that it is not recommendable to apply any essential oil directly on the skin because we may get sensitization in that area.

The concentration of the dilution depends on the usage of the essential oil, i.e., what do we want to use the essential oil for. For instance, in this case, I used lavender oil for daily skin care, which means that my dilution was of 2-3%. According to AromaWeb, the easiest way to make a 2% dilution is to measure the essential oil by drops while adding them to a base oil. The base oil that I chose was coconut oil because is a natural moisturizer and works great on the skin. The number of drops may vary depending on the ml that we use. Since I poured 30 ml (1 oz.) of coconut oil into a bowl, I added 12-15 drops of lavender oil to create my 2% dilution.

Here I will leave you a conversion chart that was really helpful for me when I started to use an essential oil. The chart was made by Robert Tisserand, Valerie Worwood and Kurt Schnaubelt who are well-known authors in the aromatherapy world. In fact, Tisserand wrote a book named “Essential Oil Safety: A Guide for Health Care Professionals,” which contains 400 essential oils profiles and their usages. Of course, these are average measures that serve as guidelines to create dilutions. Dilutions usually vary depending on the age, health condition, and skin sensitivity. Since I have sensitive skin, I would recommend the same measure that I have used because I haven’t developed any reaction or sensitization.

The usage of essential oils has to be taken seriously and must be done properly in order to get positive results. I have been applying both coconut oil and lavender oil on my legs for a month now, and the results had been awesome. My skin is not only smoother and softer, but also the irritation has decreased notably. I encourage you to try essential oils as long as you are responsible regarding this matter.

I will always share with you what has worked for me explaining it as much as I can with detailed information. I’m sure there are more people with similar skin problems, and that’s why I decided to write a post about this subject. It really helped me, and I thought that maybe it would also help you.

Much love!

Cleaning our makeup brushes is a MUST

first brush .jpg

Did you know that makeup brushes contain a certain level of bacteria? And every time we use them, the bacteria and dirt are accumulating and contaminating our makeup? Well, now you know.

A study made by Dr. Andrew Summerfield at BioCote revealed that there was heavy contamination on a tested makeup brush by a bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. This bacteria ‘“is capable of causing a variety of skin associated diseases, such as boils and [acne].”’ Moreover, ‘“Staphylococcus aureus can [also] be the cause of much more serious diseases such as endocarditis, bacteremia, and pneumonia.”’

Now, the question is: how can we prevent this from happening? The answer is simple; we need to learn HOW to clean our brushes properly and do it as part of our daily routine.

There exist multiple cleansers for brushes. We could use a bar soap and rub the brushes directly onto it after we use them, or buy one portable at Sephora. Moreover, Beau Nelson, a celebrity makeup artist, recommends a dish cleanser (Dawn, Palmolive) for synthetic brushes because it stops the cosmetics oils from staying in the brushes. We could also enhance this routine by washing them with shampoo! All we need to do is pour the shampoo into a bowl and dip one brush at a time. Since foundations are harder to wash off, we should dip them a little longer. In addition, lip brushes tend to accumulate heavy pigments and oils, which is why Hung Vanngo, The Wall Group’s makeup artist, recommends to wash them with The Master Brush Cleaner & Preserver because it can strip off the oils. We can find this item on Amazon for $5.38!

Once we have applied these cleansers, we must wash the brushes with cold water because hot water may damage the metal bristles from the brushes. Another key element here is HOW we let our brushes to dry; it’s important to let them dry naturally and lay them down on a paper towel, in that way the paper towel will absorb everything.

The following step refers to storage our makeup brushes. Most of us tend to keep them in the bathroom, which is actually not the best idea because water vapor and humidity create the perfect environment for bacteria to reproduce. The safest way to keep our brushes is by exhibiting them in a glass or plastic container in a dry room.

I know that this is not a fun task, but we MUST do it. From now on, cleaning our brushes will be a MUST in our daily beauty routine, right?

How to make your own skincare routine at home

As you all may know, skin care is expensive but is NECESSARY. Nowadays, cosmetics stand on a high budget, especially if we want organic and natural products without many chemicals. That is why I decided to write this post; I will talk about the benefits of using nature’s products instead of fabricated cosmetics.

Some of you may be thinking what do I mean by nature’s products? Well, I refer to the products that the Mother Nature gives us every day.

The first thing that we need to include in our skin-care routine is a cleanser. It does not matter what problem we are trying to address – acne, wrinkles or spots – a cleanser is a MUST, and it MUST be used both morning and night. If we do not feel like buying one, we can always make it!

Recently, I have been testing different natural products not only to determine which one has the best effect but also which one has more benefits for the skin.

Here it’s a list of the products that I’ve been using in the last weeks and their properties. Let’s start!

Avocado oil’s properties:

  • Natural moisturizer
  • Contains vitamin A, D, and E
  • Restores the skin

Aloe Vera’s properties:

  • Since it contains two hormones, auxin, and gibberellins, it stimulates the growth of new cells allowing the skin to heal quickly.
  • Treats stretch marks by giving more elasticity to the skin.
  • Moisturizes the skin without adding a greasy feeling, so it’s perfect for any type of skin.

Calendula petals extract’s properties:

  • Possesses healing abilities for any type of scrapes or wounds.
  • Improves the skin appearance by providing antioxidant protection that reduces wrinkles.
  • Anti- inflammatory.

Apricot kernel oil’s properties:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anti- aging since it nourishes and supports the skin.
  • Anti- bacterial and anti- septic, which means that is effective for acne and prevents infections.

Fat-free yogurt’s properties:

  • The active cultures from the yogurt and its lactic acid help smooth and hydrate the skin.
  • It has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, which means it can help remove blackheads and whiteheads.
  • If used often, yogurt can reduce skin’s discoloration.

Honey’s properties:

  • Natural pore cleanser. Thanks to its enzymes, honey can clarify the skin and keep the pores clear.
  • It’s a natural humectant.
  • Reduces the look of scars and improves tissue regeneration.

Now that we are familiar with these goodies, we can start applying them!

For the cleanser, I mixed two tablespoons of honey, one tablespoon of aloe vera and another teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Once it was ready, I applied the cleanser and gently massaged my face always avoiding direct contact with my eyes. When the 10 minutes passed, I removed the mixture with warm water and ta-da! My face was fresh and smooth.

This cleanser can be used by anyone, but I highly recommend it to people with oily skin and breakouts. The properties of these ingredients are great to fight acne.

Secondly, it’s important to use a moisturizer every time we clean our face, especially if we are in winter. Dryness and cold weather are best friends… but not for too long.

The moisturizer was made of fat-free natural yogurt and rosehip oil. Why yogurt? Because it’s one of the best natural moisturizers and has anti-bacterial properties. I put two tablespoons of yogurt and one teaspoonful of rosehip oil in a bowl and then mixed them until the texture was perfect. I applied this mixture all over my face and removed it with warm water after 10 mins.

This masque is great for any skin type because it moisturizes the skin while removing the dead cells of the face. Also, the rosehip oil contains fatty acids that rejuvenate the skin and prevent premature aging.

I found all these products in Amazon and the supermarket. The price range is around $5 to $10. As I said before, skin care isn’t necessarily expensive.

I hope this information is useful to you, and I really encourage you to try to include these ingredients in your daily skin-care routine to address your needs. Not only because it’s a budget-friendly option, but also because most of the best things in life come from our mother nature.

However, if some of you don’t feel like doing your own thing and prefer to buy natural-based organic cosmetics, choose a brand with products that contain ingredients that you can actually see. Chemicals have side effects that will hit us later in life if we do not control the doses we are using. So read all the active ingredients of a product before purchasing it. We should always know what we are putting on our skin.
